What are Stretch Marks?
A stretch mark is defined as a type of scar that develops when our skin stretches or shrinks quickly. This abrupt change causes the collagen and elastin to rupture and they actually support our skin. Even though the skin heals, they leave behind stretch marks.
These are usually found in pregnant women or patients who gained and lost weight considerably quickly.
Stretch marks due to pregnancy are usually seen on the legs, abdomen, hips, and other body parts of the mother who was affected by the weight gain during pregnancy.
Some of the other causes of stretch marks are:
Pregnancy
During pregnancy, the skin has to expand or stretch substantially creating tiny tears in the supporting
layers of the skin which later turn out to be stretch marks after pregnancy.
Genetics
Weight fluctuations
Accelerated growth throughout adolescence
Scars
Scars are bumps or hollows in our skin after injury or infection. Severe acne also can lead to bumps(hypertrophic scars or keloids) or depressions in the skin giving an uneven and undesirable appearance.
